Santa Cruz de la Cañada is situated north of Santa Fé, NM. It is nine miles from the small chapel known as El Santuario de Chimayó. La Villa Nueva de la Santa Cruz de la Cañada de los Españoles Mexicanos del Rey Nuestro Señor Don Carlos Segundo was founded under its official name in 1695 by Governor and Captain-General don Diego de Vargas. It was the first Villa founded after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and the only town to be founded by Governor de Vargas. It was New Mexico's 2nd Villa after Santa Fé, and before Alburquerque. The name of the Villa translates to: The New Villa of the Holy Cross of the Gulch of the Spanish-Mexicans of the King Our Lord Charles the Second. In later years, its name was shortened to La Villa Nueva de Santa Cruz de la Cañada, then eventually to Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Its first colonists were Españoles-Mexicanos, or Spanish-Mexicans. These were residents of Mexico City who were of Spanish descent, as opposed to those who were of Native-American descent. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
